The Redfield, SD community lost a beloved doctor and friend, Dr. Matthew P. Owens, on his 60th birthday - 11/29/2023.
Dr. Owens placed great value in building families and communities through his practice in rural family medicine. He built positive relationships with patients and community members, encouraging them to get involved in rural health programs, especially emergency response.
Dr. Matthew Owens, known to most as Doc, developed the "Dakota Responder Training" course to better prepare people living and working in rural South Dakota communities to provide first level triage care at the scene of an accident prior to EMS arrival. Doc Owens’ unmet vision was to implement a formalized process of providing "Dakota Responder Training" to a wide range of organizations, businesses and localities, such as, Agtegra employees, high school students and teachers, indigenous members of tribal nations, volunteers affiliated with fire departments, rural electric cooperative employees, road construction crews, and medium and large sized businesses. "Dakota Responder Training" is a three-hour course led by a qualified emergency responder. The training focuses on teaching lifesaving methods, including STOP THE BLEED™ techniques, Narcan administration, AED operation, and other skills needed to provide first level triage care.

INAUGURAL
"DOC OWENS LEGACY FUND" APPEAL FOR DONATIONS

“Everyone should believe in something. I believe I’ll go fishing.”
~ Henry David Thoreau
One of Doc's all-time joys was spending time in the great outdoors, pursuing his passions for fishing and hunting. Doc's love for hunting and fishing was not just a pastime - it was a way of life that he enjoyed sharing with family and friends.
The 2024 inaugural appeal for donations in support of the "Dr. Matthew P. Owens Legacy Fund" incorporates Doc's passion for fishing as a way to further his vision of making available emergency response resources for rural South Dakota communities and tribal lands.
